Getting Used to Florida Heat

Given the extreme heat and humidity during Florida Summers, people sometimes ask us if we get used to these extreme conditions. The answer is short and simple: no. After six Summers in Florida we do not jump around at noon in the baking Summer sun. Instead, we still try to hide inside in cool air conditioned areas--much like we did during our first weeks here.

However, our not getting used to the conditions doesn't mean our bodies have not adjusted. Throughout the years we have noticed significant changes--not while in Florida but when we go back to Belgium--especially during the Winter. For instances, during the cold spell of last week we were among the first to feel cold. Especially at night, we had a hard time adjusting to the lower temperatures. We didn't used to be like this--so, yes, in a way we have adjusted to the Florida heat: not enough to feel comfortable in extremely high temperatures but just enough to feel cold sooner in low temperatures.

Getting Started

Christmas day is not here yet, we all know. Real snow hasn't fallen, weather experts claim. But the weather has been as close as it gets to perfect Christmas weather without snow. For about a week skies have been exceptionally clear--and blue--while temperatures were low--below 32F at night and during parts of the day. The frost by itself--without snow--laid a white-ish cover over houses, lawns and trees even though all original colors remained visible. Yesterday, the frost was helped by "drizzle" snow, no real snow according to weather experts but snow nevertheless--especially for Floridians who see in this type of precipitation their only chance to claim they have witnessed snow. The flakes are very tiny and hard to spot but they are white and they are not rain.

Apart from the drizzl snow, we haven't had any of the usual Belgian precipitation (i.e. rain) for more than a week. The wind has blown at times but whispered or was deaf silent at other times, leaving us with a beautiful and peaceful white landscape that is rather uncommon in Belgium let alone Florida. Because this type of weather is scarce, you value it all the more. The views are peaceful and stunning. The walks are breath taking and lung-filling. The fire place inside is cozy and comfortable. And who knows what is yet to come? Winter started just today.

Short Day / Korte Dag

After a good night of sleep we woke up a few hours ago. Now I just finished some work for school and yet it is getting dark outside. It seems like the day has just begun so how comes the lights need to be switched on already? Well, we have arrived in Europe and now we are living in a different time zone. As a result we slept till noon local time--6am in Florida.

But now it's only 4pm local time and in Florida 6pm is when the sun starts getting down. Another factor is that Belgium is located more North than Florida. This time of the year the sun is going down earlier than in Florida--the daily process of sun down also takes longer--and it rises later in the morning (During summer we see the opposite).

However, it isn't till 5pm that the the sun is actually setting here in Belgium. A third factor that is making our day so short today is the overcast sky and the accompanying rain. Yes, we went from one extreme to another. Record amounts of rain have been coming down the past few days. Folks in Florida are craving such precipitation. People here wouldn't mind giving away much of it. It would made for a nice Christmas present, both for the recipient and the giver, but unfortunately that is not how these things works.

At any rate, hopefully we'll adjust soon to the new time zone so that our days will get longer spontaneously. And who knows we will get some snow--it might help making the daylight seem to last longer, especially if the snow stays and makes for a white carpet that reflects the sunlight.

Holiday Season 2007

We haven't left yet but if we'll get snow during the 2007 Holiday season, you'll read about it here. In the meanwhile, feel free to check out some posts below from a previous trip.

Differences

The surprising lack of differences observed during our initial days in Belgium was the focus of the first episode of Live From Europe--the weather in Belgium and Florida had been surprisingly similar. The seven weeks following our arrival have uncovered numerous differences between between Florida and Belgium but also between Belgium then (7 weeks ago) and Belgium now. And the notorious Belgian weather has not been the only one.

One difference that hits us usually during the first week is the well known fact that everything in Belgium is located closer to each other. The distance between towns tends to be shorter. Pieces of land maintained by farmers are smaller. The structure of the scenery is different as well. Cities in the US follow the grid pattern whereas European cities tend to mirror the spider web pattern. In the country side, the pattern of roads is less unidimensional in Belgium with more curves and corners. One thing I like about the curves is that they tend to hide surprises. Sometimes a whole new scenery emerges.

A third difference relates to a curve of a different type and compares then (7 weeks ago) to now. Amelie's steady growth curve has made her relatively easy to take care of. Together with the many helping hands of her grand parents, that has provided her parents with more quality time the last weeks of the visit. Help from the family was not unanticipated but we've been spoiled more than we could have ever dreamed.

The visit has made a difference and adjusting to the pre-visit routines will be not easy. However that works out will be reported on the Live From Florida blog.

Longer Days

Belgium is not located on the North Pole and Florida is not located on the equator. Yet, Belgium is situated closer to the North Pole while Florida finds itself closer to the equator. One obvious consequence is the temperature difference even though Belgium has been enjoying surprisingly high temperatures lately.

Shadow and a hat have been surprisingly comfortable

But the focus of this story lies elsewhere. With the summer approaching rapidly, the longest day of the year is coming up. That day, just as any other day since beginning of Spring, is longer in Belgium than in Florida because of Belgium's more northern latitude (slightly higher than the US-Canada border). The sun is going down past 10pm and coming up before 6am. Even indirect sunlight is surprisingly powerful before official sunrise and after sundown. It's almost as if we're in Alaska (or the Northpole for that matter) where the sun does not go down this time of year.

Even when the sun is out of sight, she's never far away.

Some people don't like the long days because of the necessarily short nights. Getting a long night of sleep is less easy because of the light. That may be true, but others get more energy out of the extra daylight, and thus need less sleep. It's as if the light abundance is injects extra energy shots--in Alaska folks take advantage by playing baseball at "night" without artificial light. We haven't been playing baseball but we certainly enjoy the extra energy of longer days and prefer long Belgian summer days over the short days during winter time. Interestingly for us, winter days in Florida are longer than in Belgium.

Belgian or Florida Friends?

While in Belgium, we usually catch up with Belgian friends, that is, folks who became friends before we left for Florida six years ago. Today's get together was different even though we met in Belgium and the friends are Belgian. The difference is that we first met these Belgian friends in Florida.

They moved to Gainesville for one year while we were completing our MBA and PhD in the same city. They came back while we stayed in Florida and moved to Orlando. Now, they are living in Leuven, a stone's throw away from where we are staying now so we invited them for breakfast.

Catching up here in Belgium felt unique since we used to meet in Florida. Their girls have grown so much. Amelie wasn't even born when they left. Seeing the three girls play together while we were all enjoying a beautiful Sunday morning in Belgian Spring was special. We look forward to the next meeting even though it's not sure if that 'll be in Belgium or in Florida.

Paris, Our Pleasure

Belgium is part of Europe. Yet, Europe is more than Belgium. Given the title of this blog--Live From Europe--it's high time for real European action. A high speed train trip from Brussels to Paris brought just that. No more than 75 minutes were needed by the Thalys to bridge the 200 mile gap between the two cities from neighboring countries.

Fast, comfortable and easy: the Thalys

Enjoying the train ride, strolling around in Paris, dining and having fun were ingredients of the first of our two days. Paris is known for its fine cuisine and thanks to our Paris loving friends we dined only at the good places.

Just one of the many places where we enjoyed fine cuisine

Although tennis at the French Open was reserved for day 2, at one point it looked like we wouldn't be able to witness any tennis at all. Interestingly enough, the weather was not the reason. While at the entrance of the Roland Garros grounds, we found out that our tickets were valid for the day prior to the one we showed up. But we ended up having a lot of fun on day 2 as well, partly because of this hilarious story but also because we ended up buying even better tickets with access to the second biggest court where we rooted for some the best and most exciting players on both the men's and women's tour. Yes, Paris was our Pleasure. Both days! :-)

Room with a View

In Florida, we live 30 minutes away from downtown Orlando and from the international airport. This link shows what our direct neighborhood looks like. We're surrounded by apartments in our own community and by other communities outside our own.

In Belgium, too, we stay 30 minutes away from downtown Brussels and from the international airport. This photo shows what the neighborhood looks like. Even though we're only 10 minutes away from Leuven, a college town with 25000 students, we are enjoying nature's wideness and quieteness at its best.

Dining outside is even more enjoyable with a view like this, especially when the weather cooperates with sunny skies and tempting temperatures. When, in addition, specialties of the house are being served on a seemingly ordinary week day, you know you're being spoiled.

Thanks to wireless internet it's even a great location to write this blog.

One reason why Amelie likes the location is the permanent and direct view on the grazing horses of her godfather. Can you think of a room with a better view?

Belgian Bedtime

Crossing multiple time zones when traveling requires extra adjustments, especially when kids are involved. In the past, we had not adjusted Amelie to the time zone in the new destination. In Belgium, she went to bed around midnight whereas 7pm is her bedtime in Florida. One major advantage was that re-adjustment in Florida was easier when we got back.

This time, too, we tried to not adjust her time schedule. However, spontaneously she got up earlier and earlier--by 8am instead of noon--and thus she needed to go to bed earlier. Perhaps, not adjusting is easier with very young babies. For now, we like the new schedule. Neither we nor the other house guests need to stay awake till midnight. The one thing we'll have to hope is that Amelie stops waking up earlier. Chances are slim that the other house guests would appreciate waking up every day at 6am. Or earlier.

Beating Technological Advancement

Technological advancement is enormous. Among those who benefit most are folks like us who live abroad. We easily take pictures and e-mail them to our family in Belgium. Or we call, even for free thanks to the computer. Moreover, we can see each other during a telephone call thanks to video calling features. That way, we have participated actively in Belgian family parties from our house in Florida.

Technologische vooruitgang is enorm.

But technological communication advancement does not beat live participation. During our visit we have been celebrating the birthday of both Amelie's granddaddies plus Mother's day. The birthday of her godfather is coming up soon. No video calling features or computers were or will be needed to enjoy the celebrations. Technological communication tools are being used but this time it's only the digital photo camera that is appealed to, to take pictures of all of us--for all of us to enjoy.

She looks like ...

She looks just like ... We're hearing this more often now that we're spending more time with the family. Folks like to share their opinions about who they think Amelie resembles most: Mom or Dad. Different people hold different opinions even though each of those opinions is held with great confidence. Some folks claim that Amelie looks like her Mom. Others say, with an equally high level of confidence, that she looks like her Dad. Most likely Amelie has a bit of both her parents but that is not what people see, or at least say.

It's funny. To a certain degree folks see what they want to see or what they know. For instance, those who know Mom best may see more similarities with her, and vice versa. Feel free to form your own opinion. For us it's hard to judge. We think she doesn't really look like either of us though we see similarities in behavior--with the two of us. When Amelie is playing or working on her own we see a little Mom in action. When she's staring seriously as if she's investigating something we see a little Dad at work. But in the end she's an entire new kiddie with her own unique personality. And that's clearly what makes this so special.

Unchanged

News is usually about changes. Traveling abroad, too, is about changes. The country, the time zone, the climate zone and so many other things change. Yet, today's story is about something that has not changed. Ironically, exactly the non-change is making this item news.

Nieuws gaat doorgaans over verandering.

Despite having traveled from Florida to Belgium the weather has remained virtually unchanged. The first two days of our stay have brought nothing but blue skies, lots of sunshine and temperatures up to the eighties--indeed, typical Florida weather this time of year.

Amelie with her niece Elies and godfather Giel.

This is news because anytime you travel to Belgium you expect cloudy skies and pouring rains, especially during the month of April which is known for its stormy conditions. During such days people try to make themselves comfortable inside the house.

Instead, we've been enjoying lunches and dinners outdoors with both of our families. Amelie has had ample opportunity to explore the spacious garden at both locations. All three of us have received this lack of change as a warm welcome.

More to Come

While we're in Europe, this is the temporary location of Live From Florida. Nothing is posted yet, either because we haven't left or because nothing earth shaking has happened.
