Differences

The surprising lack of differences observed during our initial days in Belgium was the focus of the first episode of Live From Europe--the weather in Belgium and Florida had been surprisingly similar. The seven weeks following our arrival have uncovered numerous differences between between Florida and Belgium but also between Belgium then (7 weeks ago) and Belgium now. And the notorious Belgian weather has not been the only one.

Het verrassende gebrek aan verschillen geobserveerd tijdens onze eerste dagen in Belgie was de focus van het eerste verhaaltje van Live From Europe--het weer in Belgie en Florida was verrassend gelijkaardig geweest. De zeven weken volgend op onze aankomst hebben wel verschillen bloot gelegd tussen Florida en Belgie maar ook tussen Belgie toen (7 weken geleden) en Belgie nu. En het berucht Belgische weer is niet het enige geweest.


One difference that hits us usually during the first week is the well known fact that everything in Belgium is located closer to each other. The distance between towns tends to be shorter. Pieces of land maintained by farmers are smaller. The structure of the scenery is different as well. Cities in the US follow the grid pattern whereas European cities tend to mirror the spider web pattern. In the country side, the pattern of roads is less unidimensional in Belgium with more curves and corners. One thing I like about the curves is that they tend to hide surprises. Sometimes a whole new scenery emerges.

Een verschil dat gewoonlijk opvalt tijdens de eerste week is het wel bekende feit dat in Belgie alles korter bij mekaar ligt. De afstand tussen steden is kleiner. Weides en velden zijn kleiner. Ook de structuur van het landschap is anders. Steden in de VS volgen het dambordpatroon terwijl Europese steden georganiseerd zijn naar het spinneweb principe. Op het platteland is het wegenpatroon minder eendimensioneel in Belgie met al de bochten en draaiingen. Plezant aan de bochten is dat ze soms verrassingen verbergen. Soms verschijnt een heel nieuw landschap.


A third difference relates to a curve of a different type and compares then (7 weeks ago) to now. Amelie's steady growth curve has made her relatively easy to take care of. Together with the many helping hands of her grand parents, that has provided her parents with more quality time the last weeks of the visit. Help from the family was not unanticipated but we've been spoiled more than we could have ever dreamed.

Een derde verschil gaat over de vooruitgang die Amelie heeft gemaakt. Dankzij haar gestage ontwikkeling is ze relatief gemakkelijk in de omgang. Samen met de vele helpende handen van de grootouders heeft dat voor onverwacht veel quality time gezorgd voor de ouders tijdens de laatste weken. Hulp van de familie was niet onverwacht maar nu zijn we meer verwend geweest dan we hadden kunnen dromen.




The visit has made a difference and adjusting to the pre-visit routines will be not easy. However that works out will be reported on the Live From Florida blog.
