Getting Started

Christmas day is not here yet, we all know. Real snow hasn't fallen, weather experts claim. But the weather has been as close as it gets to perfect Christmas weather without snow. For about a week skies have been exceptionally clear--and blue--while temperatures were low--below 32F at night and during parts of the day. The frost by itself--without snow--laid a white-ish cover over houses, lawns and trees even though all original colors remained visible. Yesterday, the frost was helped by "drizzle" snow, no real snow according to weather experts but snow nevertheless--especially for Floridians who see in this type of precipitation their only chance to claim they have witnessed snow. The flakes are very tiny and hard to spot but they are white and they are not rain.

Kerstdag moet nog komen, weten we allemaal. Echte sneeuw is er niet gevallen, beweren experts. Maar het weer is zo dicht bij perfect Kerstweer geweest als maar kan zijn zonder dat er sneeuw is gevallen. Gedurende meer dan een week hebben we uitzonderlijk heldere blauwe lucht gehad terwijl de temperaturen onder het vriespunt doken 's nachts en soms overdag. De vorst zorgde zelf--zonder sneeuw--voor een witte film op de huizen, gazonnen en bomen hoewel alle eigen kleuren zichtbaar bleven. Gisteren werd de vorst bovendien geholpen door motsneeuw, geen echte sneeuw volgens weersdeskundigen maar sneeuw niettemin--zeker voor Florida bewoners die met dit type sneeuw hun enige kans zien om te beweren dat ze sneeuw hebben zien vallen. De vlokken zijn heel dun en moeilijk te zien maar ze zijn wit en ze zijn geen regen.



Apart from the drizzl snow, we haven't had any of the usual Belgian precipitation (i.e. rain) for more than a week. The wind has blown at times but whispered or was deaf silent at other times, leaving us with a beautiful and peaceful white landscape that is rather uncommon in Belgium let alone Florida. Because this type of weather is scarce, you value it all the more. The views are peaceful and stunning. The walks are breath taking and lung-filling. The fire place inside is cozy and comfortable. And who knows what is yet to come? Winter started just today.

Naast de motsneeuw hebben we geen last gehad van typisch Belgische neerslag--regen--sinds meer dan een week. De wind striemde met momenten maar fluisterde of was geruisloos op andere momenten. Het resultaat was een prachtig wit en vredig landschap dat ongewoon is in Florida en zelfs in Belgie. Omdat ditweertype zo zeldzaam is waardeer je het des te meer. Het zicht is tegelijkertijd vredig en indrukwekkend. De wandelingen zijn adembenemend en long-vullend. De open haard en kachel zijn gezellig comfortabel. En wie weet wat komt er nog aan? De winter is pas begonnen vandaag.
